Valletta: Born To Defend, Transformed By History

From fortress city to refuge and center of power: a story of war, survival and transformation.

About This Experience

Valletta was born as a fortress city, designed to protect Malta and prepared to withstand long periods of conflict. It’s fortifications, streets and underground spaces were conceived not only for defense, but also to ensure the survival of those who lived in the city, with water systems and food storage.

From this defense strategy, we will start in Floriana, following in the footsteps of the Knights of St. John and the strategies that turned this area into an important defensive system in the Mediterranean. We will discover how Valletta went from fortress and center of power to refuge during the war, while its inhabitants faced bombardment, shortages, displacement, and new roles in everyday life.

This story will take us to the heart of Valletta, where fortifications, historic buildings and current institutions coexist with a living city. An experience to discover how a city created to defend Malta was transformed through war, survival and the people who inhabited it.

What will you discover?

A Valletta that few visitors get to know.

  • The strength of its defences: large walls and structures built in the characteristic limestone of Malta.
  • The strategy behind a fortress-city, prepared to withstand long periods of conflict and protect those who lived within its walls.
  • The legacy of the Knights of St. John and the evolution of their presence in Malta and in the construction of Valletta.
  • The keys to survival during a siege: reserves, storage, water, grain and food distribution.
  • Life under the streets of Valletta, from old warehouses and water systems to the shelters used during World War II.
  • The transformation of daily life after the war, and the traces of survival and memory that still remain in Valletta.
